Pinto beans and rice served with corn bread or corn tortillas are often a hearty meal where meat is not available; the beans are an important source of protein in this case. Because of the stained skin that resembles the skin of the pinto horse, the beans are called "pinto beans" in Spanish. In Portugal they are called "feijão catarino".
