Grey warships live and die on their detail, and a good wash is how you make it show. This enamel wash flows into recesses across grey-hulled ships — Kriegsmarine, US Navy, Imperial Japanese Navy and the rest — pulling out panel lines and casting subtle shadow without muddying the base grey underneath.

Shake it well, flood the detail, then wipe back the excess with white spirit — it's one of the oldest tricks in modelling because it still works every time.
