Smoke is the oil for exhaust soot and the burnt, sooty grime that builds up on anything hard-worked or knocked about. It adds real chromatic richness to wheels, engines and battle-damaged hulls, and thins beautifully into dark washes and filters for the streaked exhaust trails you see running back from an aircraft's engine nacelles.
